Helio finishes second in Detroit

In Sunday’s Detroit Indy Grand Prix presented by Firestone IndyCar Series event, Helio Castroneves, driver of the No. 3 Team Penske Dallara/Honda, finished in second place for the record eighth time this season, further closing the gap between himself and his first 2008 IndyCar Series driver championship.

A controversial call by IndyCar Series officials might have cost Helio Castroneves a win on Sunday afternoon in Detroit, but the Team Penske driver still managed to move closer to the series championship. Castroneves was leading the race when, on lap 72, he was ordered to surrender the position to Justin Wilson as penalty for impeding. Wilson went on to win, while Castroneves came home solidly in second. The finish, coupled with current points leader Scott Dixon’s fifth-place finish, brought Castroneves within 30 points of the lead for the championship with just one race remaining in the 2008 IndyCar Series season.

“We finished second for the eighth time, but the point is we’re still in the hunt for the championship, and Team Penske is going to try everything we can to win it,” said Castroneves, who made his 111th consecutive start on Sunday, passing former teammate Sam Hornish Jr. for the second-longest streak all time.

While Castroneves was visibly upset after Sunday’s race, he congratulated his crew on its effort. “Our Team Penske guys did a great job in the pits, and it’s too bad we couldn’t win for them,” he said.

The 2008 IndyCar Series season finale, the PEAK Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 300, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 7 at Chicagoland Speedway. The race will be telecast live at 3:30 p.m. EDT by ABC and be broadcast live on the IMS Radio Network.

    Oi Helinho,
I haven’t seeing you since we graduated in 93, but I always get updates on your life through both Brazilian and US news. I am sad and very, very sorry about everything you have been going through, specially the way you were treated. Your situation is very unfortunate.
I am very proud of you and I wish you all the best.
    Deus te ajude.

    Beijos,

    Dani

Força Helio! Sabemos que você vai ganhar mais essa corrida e tudo vai acabar bem nesse problema da receita federal americana.

Helio, I know it must have been difficult for you coming in 2nd under the circumstances in Detroit, but I remember reading how wonderful the win was for car owner, Paul Newman that day. I just read today that Paul Newman passed away on Sept. 26th. Maybe that was the reason why you had to come in 2nd that day. Paul was an amazing person, and a wonderfully charitable and humble man. God just needed you to make room that day for one of Paul’s last memorable events on this earth. God Bless You, and stay safe in Austrailia.

    Hélio,
vc precisou ser muito macho para aguentar o final da corrida. Foi uma cena emocionante e vc está de parabéns. Um grande abraço.

Helio… you crack me up! I get a grin on my face and a tickle in my core every time I think about how you ran and won the race yesterday! Could you possibly have made it more nerve wracking? You were an absolute joy to watch… yes the finish was perfect, and I enjoyed you zipping around Danica and Weldon, but you really made Dixon work for that championship. 28th to 1st… Well done Helio!! Thanks for a great ride!

Hola Helio, I am so proud and happy today you could be my own son. It took me a whole day to gather my thoughts. A year ago I did not know your name, but fell in love on DWTS. I came to Indy 500 but couldn’t get your autograph because you were surrounded. I got some really good pics though and really enjoyed the whole racing atmosphere. I will come to the race in Texas next season because it is closer to me but will get back to Indy the next year. See I have my next couple of years all mapped out because it is worth seeing you race. Chicago is a memory I will always have because you demonstrated true excellence. Your determination and drive are a model for all athletes everywhere, especially in this Olympic year, where, if there was a motorsports division you would definitely get the gold medal. Hope to see you around the TV this off season and will wait for the new racing season to open. Love and best wishes always.

Way to go!! What a joy to watch Helio’s reaction when he was told he won the race. I am sure those at home watching already predicted he was the winner, I know I was fairly certain. I never doubted you would not be in the lead by the end of the race. I love to watch you race and when doing interviews because you seem to genuinely love what you do. Keep up the great job.

Helio! Fantastic win, fantastic season! You deserved the Chicagoland win, last to first was beyond amazing. What excitement you and your team, Tim, Ryan, Roger and all the Black Knights, provided us. If that was the plan, to show you are the greatest driver, it worked. You are! Outstanding performances all year long (including DWTS where, for me, it all started) Cant wait for the next season and will be sure to see a race in person. You are 2nd in the championship but 1st in our hearts!!! Love you and thanks for so many great memories!!!

WOW!!! I actually had butterflies there at the end… What a way to end the series! Congratulations, Helio… The look on your face when you found out you really did win, that was worth more than a million. Enjoy well deserved rest and relaxation with your friends and family and Tuggi.

Great drive today Helio! A drive after my own heart! You did everything you had to do, and you should be proud! Thanks so much for the performance this year, and all the past feats! Your drives are inspiring, dude! Godspeed!

OBRIGADO E PARABENS.
Scot Dixon may be a great pilot, but for me you are the best. Brazilian soccer team you know just
disapoint us, but you make the difference, we watch guys like you, that really make us proud to be brazilians. Hope you are very happy abbaout the RACE, it was greatest I’ve ever seen, last final-photo

Really, again, thank you for the RACE and CONGRATULATIONS once again!

You raced the wheels off your car today. It was awesome to watch! Coming form last to first and leading the most laps–amazing! I have been a fan since the days at Bettenhausen Racing and have watched the ups and downs of the racing seasons. The finish at chicago was the closest ever, and won by the right man. If only Dixon had finished a few places back! Can’t wait to cheer for you to take the Indy 500 and the Championship next year! See you at Long Beach. One of the things I enjoy most about cheering for you is your positive outlook and level of class even when the outcome is questionable!

  14. Heatherat 9:22 pm on September 7th, 2008

Now THAT is how you prove a point!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don’t have words to express how proud and happy I am. I was so angry yesterday, but qualifying didn’t mean a damn thing. I don’t even care that Dixon won the championship. You flat out, hands down, no doubt about it proved who the best driver is. LOVE IT!!!!!

    Helio,

Awesome win today. Coming from last to 1st…WOW!!! You did absolutely everything you could have done, and we are all so proud of you. What an amazing race car driver you are! Sorry about the championship trophy (it is pretty) but you’ll get it next year! You gave us such an exciting finish to the regular season today. You are exactly what Indy Car needs to keep the fans coming back year after year. Your enthusiasm, good sportsmanship, awesome racing ability…and don’t forget those dimples!!!

Stay safe in the October race, and let us know what you’ll be doing in the off season. Your fans will follow you wherever you go next. We’ll all be watching you on the ALMA awards on Friday, Sept. 12th on ABC.

God Bless You, and I’m so glad you stayed safe today!

CONGRATULATIONS on your win today!! Amazing to come from the 28th spot and finish 1st, what a great race you ran. It was great that you came back after last weeks ruling. I was at the race on Belle Isle and I was cheering for you the whole race, sorry no warning was given first. You handle adversity and life with that wonderful smile and positive outlook you always seem to have. I look forward to watching you have a great 2009 season. Good Luck in Australia.

Hi Helio, Wow! You are so amazing! What a race and what a fitting outcome for you to win the last race of the season. The championship awaits you next year!!!! This has been so fun to watch all season (my first one) amd I am sad to see it end. I can hardly wait for next season!!! But you have earned a well deserved rest. Hope you have fun in the off season and we will all be anxiously waiting for next year. Since we wont have you on DWTS to keep us occupied, I hope we will get to see you on guest appearances all over the place!!!

I’m sorry to see the season end but I hope you get a well deserved rest. We’ll all be thinking of you and waiting impatiently for next season. Congratulations on a job well done!

  33. Rochelleat 8:15 pm on September 6th, 2008

I could not wait to get home from work to check and see what position you would be starting from and I am in shock! I don’t think it could be any more obvious that INDY officials are pulling for Dixon! I am so disappointed that you are encountering all of these setbacks and quite frankly BS! You are the best driver out there period, not to mention your love of racing shows! You surprise me that even in the toughest situations you have a smile on your face! Keep on smiling Helio, you can do this! We’ve seen you overcome so much so far, I have total confidence in you! Send good luck to Briscoe and have him keep Dixon behind him until you can get up there and take care of business one way or another!!!

  34. Lisaat 7:47 pm on September 6th, 2008

  41. cacat 12:02 am on September 5th, 2008

Hi Helio, just read an article on Silent Pagoda that had a pretty good summary of why so many of us feel so angry at the ruling by Brian Barnhardt that called for you reliquish the lead to Wilson. Let the drivers decide who wins, by racing it out to the bitter end. Maybe Wilson would have won anyway, maybe you would have blocked sucessfully and finished with the win. That would have at least been fair. We are so quick to try to control all aspects of life and competition that we take all the fun out of it. Go Helio, win at Chicago and take the championship. Sorry Scott but he’s my guy and you aren’t.

  42. Allanat 8:21 pm on September 2nd, 2008

Tough break amigo! I don’t hear no fat lady singing yet…Run your race the only way you know how…FLAT OUT! God Bless and take it home.

  43. Annat 5:39 pm on September 2nd, 2008

    Helio –
I don’t know how Justin can stand on the first place podium when he himself was surprised by the unfair call to let him pass you w/o warning. There were lots of blocking in these races esp by Danica and Scott. I don’t understand why Brian Barnhart called your correcting of your car at that corner when you felt your car sliding to be blocking and penalized you w/o warning. You did not even make any contact with anybody nor the wall, and even had a 3-car distance in front of Justin immediately after correcting your fast car. In ballgames, emcees’ decisions are overseen by a group of officials. Who oversees Brian’s decision? I also read spotters talking with other spotters to allow Scott D’s car to get thru – is this true? If so, what kind of monkey business is this? I hope the officials realize that they will lose a lot of new fans if there are favoritisms or irregularities going on in IRL races. This is getting worse than NASCAR. I don’t intend to burden you with above observation. I was very upset – because I tho’t racing is a “clean” sport not like other sports that have somehow gotten downhill.

Helio, you are my favorite racer because of your positive attitude in the midst of adversity. You continue to inspire me to look for the positive things in life – glass half-full instead of half-empty. You are an inspiration in the way you treat your crew and your professionalism. Keep up the faith. We are looking forward for that safe win at Chicago and looking forward for a true fence-climbing celebration.

  44. Barb from Indianapolisat 4:48 pm on September 2nd, 2008

Helio, I really don’t understand the officials making you give up 1st place to a competitor when you are going for the championship and the race only has 20 laps to go. I’m sure the officials must have had to give their okay for the “magic rings” on the Firestone tires to be used by yourself and Scott Dixon. What was the point of even allowing that unless it was to try and make sure the other drivers respected the two top drivers in the championship? Too bad the officials didn’t have to respect you as well!!! It was completely disrespectful and wrong to make a call like that without even a warning…completely and totally wrong and ridiculous. I just hope it doesn’t end up costing you the championship! May God be with you in Chicago…we’ll all be with you too! You are our Champion…no matter what!! Love, Barb

  45. Barbaraat 4:19 pm on September 2nd, 2008

    Hi Helio
I think that the penalty you received on Sunday was unfair. We all know that you would not block another driver deliberately. How can a driver stand on the top step feeling proud when the win was not his to have.. I thought you were so much like the gentleman we know you are when you refused to comment to the media..
I hope that the next race win will be yours…
    Best wishes

Your happy outlook on life is contagious!!! Your parents must be so proud of you and how you remain positive even under adversity. Keep up good spirits and keep your strong faith. You have been blessed in so many ways. WE YOUR FANS LOVE YOU!!!

You ran a great race on Sunday and i agree with everyone else. You won that race. When that call came down i was on the edge of my seat with a lump in my throat and screaming at the TV set. Your the best keep it up.

  52. SANDYat 6:19 pm on September 1st, 2008

I have to agree with everyone who has posted that the call yesterday was total BS!Calls by the race control have been extremely inconsistent this year.Every driver out there blocks at some time or another to protect the position, but you don’t make a call like that 2 races to go when deciding a championship.Your fans are outraged at this call by Brian Barnhart & Co.Please Know that we are pulling for you to achieve your dream at Chicago, you can do it and continue to get in Dixon’s head….he’s a little rattled!Continue the course with Tim & Roger and bring home that trophy to put beside the “Mirrorball” and Indy 500 trophys.

  53. Oliviaat 6:18 pm on September 1st, 2008

Helio, you won at Belle Isle. The officials may have taken it away from you for whatever reason, but you did win it. I have admired you from DWTS and really believe you are a very fine human being with many, many great qualities, high values, standards and extraordinary talent. I really respect all you do and am heartbroken to see you have to get this treatment when you work so hard and give so much. From the high of winning at Sonoma to the low and frustration of the Belle Isle outcome, your fans will stand by you. You deserve to win the championship.

  54. Susanat 5:56 pm on September 1st, 2008

Helio–we’re all feeling your frustration, but you are such a gentleman and handled the situation with such class and honor. That’s why you’ve been my driver for so many years. As you always say, “It is what it is,” and I know that you are already focused on Chicagoland and what you need to do to make it happen. You’re fans are right behind you. Keep the faith!

  55. Pamat 5:28 pm on September 1st, 2008

    Helio,

I could not believe when the call came down from Race Control that you had to give up the lead to Justin Wilson. Dixon has blocked many times this season to protect the lead and never have they made him give up the spot.

Keep the faith, I know you will prevail Sunday and victory will be yours.

You are a true gentlemen and always a Champion in my eyes!

    Stay safe,

    Pam

  57. Ann Melchorat 5:04 pm on September 1st, 2008

    Hi Helio,
You are Simply the Best, and a star. Your inner strength showed at the polite way you dealt w/ Jack A who acted like an insensitive papparazzi. As usual you showed class when you spoke first with your Team Bosses and crew. I was so upset with the way your race was unfairly and wrongly called/decided by Brian B without warning. I was enjoying your racing especially when you were nearing the end of the race. You had been leading big on lots of laps so I don’t understand why they waited at almost the end of the race to pull a wrong decision. Something was fishy there, even the way the last caution was caused by Dan W. Thru-out the laps, I’ve noticed some drivers especially Danica blocking other drivers and no warning nor any penalty was called. I started watching IRL race because you introduced us to racing during your competition at DWTS. We’ll be sending you good vibes on a safe race and wins: race and championship at Chicagoland. God bless you always.

I’m called down now, after watching the race again. The rules are the rules, and while unfortunate they didn’t give you a warning, if a warning is given only when the officials seem uncertain of the block, then their call was fair. I am disappointed, however, that the rules are so rigid. If a driver is never permitted to secure his position then it detracts from racing’s excitement, imho. I would rather see rules that allow for reasonable defensive driving, like the way you blocked JW. If JW could pass, he would eventually have done it anyway. However, as the rules stand, had the race police not made the call they could also have been accused of contributing to your points; therefore, the championship points should not be an issue about the official decision.

But remember Helio, that Scott finished 12th in Sonoma and only fifth in this race. He’s feeling the pressure. You can do this because you are the best IRL driver there is. The fact that you are a class act and a gentleman in every respect adds to the beauty behind your spirit. Keep your spirit grounded in truth and it will increase your success. I was amazed at your honesty with J’Rute, rather than pretending you felt differently than you did or saying something that would compromise your spirit which many of us have come to see and love about you. Living honestly with yourself and others is your crowning glory. It will lead you further still, at Godspeed.

Well, H., I think it was a TERRIBLE call, but as always, you handled it like a real gentleman. If they hadn’t decided to time the race… AGAIN… You would have taken Wilson within a few laps, I’m sure of it. Keep your head up and stay gold… This isn’t over yet! Good luck in Chicago!

Hi Helio! I was also upset by the call because it was wrong to do that on the with only two races to go!!!!! Do they realise how many fans you have brought to the IRL Racing from dancing with the stars?! Keep your head up because you still have alot of fans like myself cheering you on. Hope you do the correspondent work for Entertainment Tonight!!!!!! Thank You for your time can’t wait to hear from you. Cherie

I, too, am so upset and frustrateds by the officials ‘taking a stand’ on blocking. They have not been consistent. But I am so proud of you and how you handled it. You ran an awesome race. We, your fans, are behind you 100%.

Totally outrageous! Where can we complain???? Helio is just supposed to give up his spot and let someone in front of him? He held that spot for most of the race and is just supposed to surrender it with no warning? IRL is priveledged to have Helio part of it and now this may have cost him the championship and many fans are angry! After all that Helio has done to promote racing, the officials should be ashamed of themselves.

That was BS. I have written IRL to state my concerns RE: NO WARNING. You handled it with such class! I am PROUD to be a FAN of yours! You are such a great Driver!

When I give my heart to anything I expect justice in return. It doesn’t matter to me if it’s politics or racing, I’m passionate about what I lend my heart to. This injustice is no less unjust, to me, than when the US Supreme Court ignored the people’s vote and anointed GW Bush our president in 2000. It won’t have the same deleterious consequences at that, but justice is always just and injustice is always imbalanced and unfair.

IT SUCKS! I think NOWHERE else in the world this could happened. I thought this was CAR RACING. It doesn’t mean that by having the fastest car you are going to win. One thing is having a fast car and getting into the gearbox of the car in front, and a VERY different thing is to PASS that car, actually I think that is what separates an ordinary driver from an extraordinary one. I also think that “ability” is what makes CAR RACING interesting. I just would love to hear from SENNA and PROST what is that they would think on yesterday’s desicion…
    UNVELIEVABLE! THEY RUINED IT!

I’m still so frustrated by this today. This was the wrong time for the officials to ‘take a stand’ on blocking. They need to be consistent or make a clear rule change. Ridiculous. Hold your head high…it’s pretty sad when the officials have to make bogus calls to keep you from winning.
