Helio Castroneves, driver of the No. 3 Team Penske Dallara/Honda, won Sunday’s PEAK Antifreeze and Motor Oil Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway in a thrilling fashion, not only did he fight back from a last-place starting position, but, pushed by teammate Ryan Briscoe, he took the checkered flag a mere 0.0033 seconds, or 12 1/8 inches, ahead of second-place finisher Scott Dixon.
The finish; second-closest in IndyCar Series history - was not without controversy. Scoring monitors initially showed Dixon as the winner, but video replays showed Castroneves hitting the finish line first. Whenever scoring monitors show a margin of victory of 0.006 or less, IndyCar Series officials revert to photo evidence to determine or clarify the winner and the precise margin of victory. Within minutes of the cars reaching the finish line and Dixon being declared the unofficial winner, Castroneves was declared the official winner. He received the news from a reporter and immediately began jumping with joy on live television.
“I won!” Castroneves screamed. “I knew I’d won!”
Sunday marked Castroneves’ first win at the 1.5-mile oval track and his second win of the 2008 IndyCar Series season. Castroneves closes out the 2008 IndyCar Series championship second in the standings, 17 points behind champion Dixon.
“What a wild race,” said Castroneves about the 200-lap event, which included multiple laps of three-wide racing and the photo finish. “What a great effort by Team Penske, we did everything we could to win the championship and executed our plan to win and take the extra points (three) for the most laps led (80). We couldn’t catch up to Dixon in points, but we definitely tried!”
For Castroneves, however, the race win and runner-up finish in the championship were the testament to teamwork and dedication. “I want to thank the entire team - they did a hell of a job,” said Castroneves, who recorded 15 top-five finishes in 2008. “Ryan (Briscoe) was a great help today. Without him, there was no question that I would not have won this race. I did what I could. He really helped me out.”
While the championship has been decided for 2008, one race remains for Helio this year. On October 26, the team will compete in Surfers Paradise, Australia in the Nikon Indy 300. The non-points event will be telecast live at 10:30 p.m. EDT Oct. 25 by ESPN Classic and will re-air at 11 p.m. Oct. 26 on ESPN2. The race will also be broadcast on the IMS Radio Network.
The 2009 IndyCar Series season will begin next March in St. Petersburg, Fla.

When I wrote last time I told you about my birthday cake. Just wanted you to know the car in the winners circle was your number 3 car. Sorry about that but I wrote it right before I went to bed.I was a little tired (ok,I was really tired) Once again you are a true WINNER and an inspiration.I hope to see that wonderful smile of yours on ET soon. You have the moral support of millions of your fans that will help you get thru these despicable charges that the US government has leveled at you. This is not the first time that people have not been properly served by their accountants and lawyers. For our court system to put you in shackles for non-violent charges, before you are even found guilty, only shows how evil the system has become. We know that you are an honorable man and have not done anything intentionally wrong. Hold your head high and don’t let them beat you down. Your faith will keep you from harm. Your fans know who the real criminals are here. Be strong for all of us.

Helio, You and Ryan were great and once again you showed your true colors! I was so concerned about you racing this weekend with all that you have going on, but you went through with it and pulled out on top! Our prayers are with you and your family during this time! I know there is more behind it than we are hearing through the news and that in the end you will come out ok. I am just so sorry that you are being targeted like this and going through this whole ordeal. And that I can’t see you win in Australia and show up Scott Dixon on home base!!! I feel so bad for all that you have had to go through in the past week.I couldn’t believe they put you in cuffs and leg chains.It was all to try to break your spirt.On Saturday you showed them the kind of man you are;one that is a WINNER.You and Ryan raced a fantastic race.Seeing your smile, excitment and hearing that you know your fans are there for you made me feel so much better.When I read that you cried in court, all I wanted to do was give you a BIG HUG (it’s the mom in me).There will be tough days ahead for you and Kati.Just always remember that we will always be there for you.

You know, the use of handcuffs wouldn’t have really shocked me but to shackle your legs that is just a little ridiculous and an obvious attempt to make a point. Stay strong Helio…you’ll get through this and all of us are here to support you.

Barb, that is why we need to vote for real change with Obama. McCain is more of the same. Have you listened to him closely? The Bush Administration was found guilty of using the Dept. of Justice for political advantage. What they are doing to Helio is an example of how far-reaching their nepotism is. Attorney Acosta, who formerly worked as clerk for now Supreme Court Justice Alito, was appointed after unethical firings of other U.S. attorneys who refused to use the Justice Dept. for Bush’s political agenda. Acosta followed through with indicting Helio because of his high profile and the press coverage his story would gain; thereby, Bush would appear to be fighting tax evaders without having to put one of his truly guilty associates on the chopping block. I feel badly because Helio thought life in America was so wonderful, but little did he know how much it resembles the economic forces in Latin America before he was even born. I recommend the book Shock Doctrine–The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein. And if you can find a copy of Brasile: Nunca Mais (Brazil: Never Again), let me know. I’d like to read all of it too. All of these thoughts are my own and I do not personally know Helio, his family or any of his associates. Still, I wish I could take this cup for him.

Helio, I just read on the Penske Racing website that you’ll be doing some of the “special correspondent” reporting for Entertainment Tonight when they cover Dancing with the Stars. So happy to hear we’ll get to see you again on ET. You did such a fantastic job last season with the interviews, etc. Everyone on the show always is so happy to have you back with them, and your supercharged personality is just a joy to behold.
Congrats also for being honored at the 23rd Great Sports Legends Dinner in New York on September 22nd. You are a wonderful role model and greatly deserving of the honor. When I read the list of previously honored athlets…Mouhammed Ali, Micket Mantle, etc…you’re in some pretty good company there!! Helio - we’ve been Danica fans since her rookie year (we’re from her hometown) and we were at the race Sunday hoping for her 2nd win. But for us, that day became all about you!! Great, great job - you are an expert at what you do and it was such a treat to see that performance in person. Congratulations on winning the Chicago race, but why didn’t you do your fence walking? You have so many dedicated fans in Chicago. You really disappointed us by not doing that. We voted every week for Dancing with the Stars with you. I told all my co-workers to vote for you. Also no announcement was made saying you won the race. That was so wrong!!! Even though my favorite driver is Scott Dixon I was really happy you won!!

Astounding. I kept a picture of the Chicago finish line, which shows what can be accomplished if one keeps the faith and never gives up. If you ever sell pictures on this site I for one would buy a better copy.

I just learned that it was the second closest photo finish in history. It was still awesome to watch. It was certainly the closest finish I’ve gotten to watch. Your spirit is a real champion….Godspeed in the coming year~
Helio: you are one amazing race driver!! You sure made the race fun for all of us but nerve-racking. I am so glad that the real winner was finally announced based on the photo finish. I could not believe that the announcers and race control officials were in a hurry to put Team Penske down while the video was running at the same time showing you as the first place winner and your great teammate was close behind you. Well, it sure back-fired on them. I am glad they had that very expensive gadgets to verify the real winner since the difference was close. I also heard that your competitor’s transponder was installed upside-down which distorted the initial reading. I wonder how long this has been going on.
Well, you are still our winner despite all the controversial and unfair calls. Your constant positive attitude and smile is very inspiring to us. I don’t know how you are able to find “half-full”glass instead of half-empty. I salute your family for the values and the support they always give you.

Congratulation Helio, was there to see this fantastic race, wish the crowd knew this before exiting, finding out in the parking lot, the entire crowd was elated. Well, I think maybe I was right that “the plan” was to knock our socks off. The race was totally awesome, Helio, and all because of your amazing driving. I am so happy you won the race and offer my Congratulations! to you. It was a photo finish. What a way to end the season, breaking the record for closest finish in Indy racing, if not any race ever. I’ll be looking forward to the next race and then the next season when you will take that championship trophy. Thank you for turning me on to this exciting sport.
Congratulations, Helio! I didn’t get to watch because of the delayed Cup race here in Richmond. As soon as I got home, we started checking to see if you won not only the battle but the war. 1 out of 2 isn’t bad but both would have been even better. For me, racing season is over just as it is for you. So now we wait until March! Enjoy your time off and next year will be the one!

Helio, Congratulations on your win at Chicago and for a great season! What an awesome race yesterday. To be able to come from last to first was just amazing. I knew you had won - I was yelling at the TV that you had won, not Scott. So glad they got that right. You are definitely the BEST driver in the series, both on and off the track. Even though you didn’t win the championship, you’re still #1 to your fans. We all love you.

Well…THAT was DRAMATIC! Thanks for the BEST RACE yet with the most tension and excitement for your fans. I just KNEW you and Tim had a plan…what a way to go. You finished the season absolutely outstanding - showing the world as you started from the VERY back of the pack coming through all that traffic to the front…all the way. Some of Julianne’s entertaining choreography has added to your own original driving style. I think YOU are the most talented driver in the IRL series and certainly THE most popular. THRILLING, I knew you’d do it and I was screaming that you’d WON and crossed the finish line first. I saw it and thank God for that photo finish to prove it! Did you ever find a fence to climb?? - TV cut off too early to let us see.
It’s really raining hard and strong force winds are rattling our shutters right now here in The Keys. Hurricane Ike was kind to us though, passing by as a Catagory 1. Stay safe when you get back to Miami as it is our season of storms. Enjoy your well deserved time off.

Congratulations man, that was pretty awesome racing in Chicago. Best of the season. You really earned that win. Will be watching for you to take the championship next season. As hard as you worked it should have been yours this year. But you were gracious as usual on congratulating Dixon, which is what makes you such a good role model.

Congratulations! What an awesome job coming from 28th to finish 1st, you drove the wheels off that car! You may not have won the championship but you are a Champion in my eyes and you are a true gentlemen.
That was definetly one of the most exciting races, I was holding my breath when you were 3 wide with Dan and Ryan.
My African Gray Parrot was even cheering you on with “Come on Helio!” throughout the race.

Helio yesterday was awesome! CONGRATULATIONS! You are an incredible athlete in so many ways and you exhibit it in just as many! I love to watch INDY races period, but you bring so much more to it and have me on the edge of my seat throughout the race! The championship should have been yours, you worked so hard and you gave Dixon a run for his money. So many enjoy watching you and are on your side! Good luck in Australia in October and I have a feeling the 2009 season is yours! Once again, Congratulations for a job well done! What did I hear yesterday, only one other driver in INDY history started in last place and finished first? Not anymore!

Helio, I watched you win at Sonoma (in person) and again (on TV) at Chicago. I wanted to tell you how impressed I am with your “can do” attitude. I was very impressed by the way you handled the reporter after Detroit when you told him “I have nothing smart to say right now” and you did it with your million dollar smile. Very classy, Helio. Far to frequently, we see famous people in all sorts of sport and other venues get nasty and whiny when things don’t go their way. Not you, though. I’m a motorhead and am bringing up my grandson to like cars and racing as much as I do. You are someone I can show him as a good example of how to compete at the highest level yet be positive and appreciative. Keep up the good work.

This was, without a doubt, the most exciting race of the season. I am so proud of you for giving Dixon a fight. You didn’t let the fact that you started in the back get you down, you just charged and did what you had to do and proved that you are the greatest driver in the IRL. Seriously! That championship should have been yours, but hey, what’s done is done, and there’s always next year!

I too posted yesterday, but as I read the many from today, it reminded me of a recent moment of yours. That moment, was when we all knew you were steamed, and why. A sports reporter, doing his job asking the tough questions. “Helio, what do you think of the”…….”I HAVE NOTHING SMART TO SAY RIGHT NOW”, and with that you walked away. Your response was so perfect, and a lesson to all who observed your actions and heard your words…..Pure class Helio. People talk of sports heroes being role models to our youth, and in this case, to us all. Your conduct made an impression on me, one I will not soon forget.

Helio,you had us so confused on saturday ..”The Plan”..and driving below the white lines.but now with the supurb win and “the change of engine,staying at the back”..we fully understand “the plan”.This was the best race of the season,watching you drive from last to first was just amazing,lead the most laps and to win it by a foot was truly admirable.We knew Dixon did not win it and we are glad they finally got it right.Even though you came up short for the championship you are a champion in our eyes,and i think 2009 will be your year.Thank you for all you do for the sport,on and off the track.Congratulations on your win…..you never cease to amaze me.

Hola Helio, I left a message on the Detroit board because I couldn’t wait to tell you how much I love and appreciate you for your work ethic and drive to win. All athletes could emulate you and there would be no more wishy washy, lets not keep score kind of competition. Go for it with all you have because there is no reason not to leave it on the field if this is your life’s passion. Your drive from worst to first was a true inspiration and so much fun to watch. I knew you would win and make us proud. Sorry about the championsheep but Dixon deserved it for his own drive to win. Your joyous attitude and upbeat demeanor on the track make us all proud to say we know you if only from “Dancing” or some of your other TV appearances. Helio, SO happy you won the race! It was obvious from the photo that you were first–don’t know why they were so slow in acknowledging that. What a race from last to first!! Must have been some kind of record. Your perseverance and enthusiasm are such a pleasure to see. Anyway, glad you won even though I couldn’t be there to give you the “grandma hug”!

P.S. I got a new fox terrier puppy a few months ago and was going to name him Helio…but all they had was girl puppys, so her name is Ellie O. She has boundless energy and enthusiasm, so I had to name her after you (she even looks a little bit like you)!! I’m kind of getting a hard time from my family though!!

This was my first Indy race ever and what a race it was. Helio is an amazing athlete with style and grace. I became a fan when I saw him on Dancing with the Stars and I became a racing fan when I saw him drive yesterday at Chicagoland Speedway. The way he came from 28th to 1st was so exciting to watch. This was and unbelievable experience and I cant wait to see him drive next year.
