The Brazilian, who celebrates his 34th birthday on May 10, scored his third Indianapolis 500 pole position and Roger Penske’s record 15th pole position with a four-lap average speed of 224.864 mph (2 minutes, 40.0967 seconds cumulative time) on the 2.5-mile oval. It was the Brazilian’s 27th career IndyCar Series pole and his first of the season.
Teammate Ryan Briscoe made a late attempt to unseat Castroneves in the six-hour session, withdrawing his second-best qualifying time, but came up short (224.083). He’ll be in the middle of Row 1, with 2007 Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti (224.010) on the outside in the No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing car.
The first 11 spots of the 33-car field were set on Pole Day. Positions 12-22 will be set May 10.

Mostrou que um piloto do seu gabarito tem que ser respeitado na pista e fora dela. Mostrou que é maduro na pista e no meio de todos os pilotos na pista. Ganhou de forma indubitável uma das mais, senão a mais dura competição no automobilismo mundial. Você é um TRICAMPEÃO UNIVERSAL e brasileiro. Lembro-me de tê-lo visto no Kartódromo de Interlagos, Limeira e Capinas ainda quando era menino e correndo com patrocínio da Hudson.

Helio, I’m so proud of you winning the pole position! I meant to tell you that when I met you last Wednesday evening at Villagio. I think I was the only gray-haired grandma who was there!!
Thanks for signing your photo “to Barb and Ellie” (Ellie is my fox terrier who looks like you…trust me…she’s very cute…and incredibly fast!!!). You were so gracious to all of your guests, and I’m quite sure the one hour you were supposed to be there went on quite a bit longer than than. Thanks for being the person you are…we are so proud to call ourselves your fans!!

First of all, my congratulations on your pole victory. You have been a favorite with me through your career and I’ve seen many a driver. I have been an Indy fanatic for over 50 years and have watched every second of TV coverage (actual it began with me listening on the radio because TV coverage had not yet begun). But Saturday was one of the most thrilling Indy days I have ever experienced. With what you have been through in the last months and the exemplary courage in which you faced it all, it was a thrill to see you on top. You richly deserve it.
But more than importantly, with what life has dealt you over the last year or so and how you dealt with it with courage, determination and the right attitude, you demonstrated that one can fight their way back to where they want to be in life. I, too, have faced some severe life challenges recently. Mine are medical and related financial in nature, which are a little different than what you faced. But sharing Saturday with you via the tube and the emotions you expressed made me think that I too will fight my way back to where I want to be. The doc is going to let me out of this wheelchair in a few weeks and I will begin my fight back to walk. With what you accomplished on Saturday and your words afterwards, I also now have the courage and determination to do it. Thanks so much for the boost of power and strength to get through this. You are the best!

This comment is requesting information from anyone out there. My brother said we may get to go to Indy (either practice or the race, if tickets aren’t sold out). I’ve never been to a race before. I walk with a cane, do people stand up all the time ?? : (

I got to work and to a computer so I could check out the additions to the website. I love the personal section. Helio, your closeness to Kati reminds me of my brother and myself. We are the only siblings and are each others best friends also. It was my brother that told me I would like Indy racing “especially Helio” (I love positive happy people !).
I’m still riding high about you being on the pole. After all God has done for you recently, it was like an extra “hug” from Our Father.

Okay, I rechecked and on the 22nd they’re going to cover your 2001 Indy race. Apparently I read too fast. And as it turns out I had recorded today’s qualifying so I was able to watch the ad again. They just said the interview will be “Next Weekend.” I’ll be tuned in for the entire weekend so I don’t miss it.

Hoje, casualmente, fazem exatos 11 anos que conheci o piloto Hélio Castroneves, que fiquei sabendo da tua ‘existência no mundo’…hehe…e era um domingo, dia das mães, eu fui assistir a corrida no Rio…apesar de tudo, e principalmente da péssima alimentação oferecida…hehe… estava fantástico, maravilhoso, aquele barulho, o cheiro…é tudo realmente inesquecível!!! Happy Birthday Helio! I cannot imagine the thrill of winning the pole today at Indy after all that you’ve been through. As I sat and watched qualification I kept thinking about the rollercoaster year you — and your fans — have had. Of course, we had the easy part — to simply stay positive and offer as many prayers as we could. Helio, 2009 is “your year” — and we’ll be cheering for sure!

Well, it’s after midnight…so it’s Sunday now and HAPPY 34th BIRTHDAY!! So wonderful to know this next year will be a much better one than last year!
While watching you sign autographs at the track last week, I wondered how odd it must feel to have so many people approaching you as if they know you, but you’ve never seen them before in your life, and yet you continue to thank all of us over and over again for our support and prayers.
It has been an incredible priviledge to be one of your “prayer warriers”. You are truly an inspiration to so many people, and as difficult as the last 6 months have been, your strength through it all will continue to inspire faith in others who possibly didn’t have faith before watching you go through what you’ve endured. Thank you for remembering to thank God for your incredible blessings. In addition to my own children, you have a very special place in this mother’s heart.

CONGRATULATIONS ON WINNING THE POLE POSITION! I was so glad that we were there to actually see you do it. It was wonderful to see you be so happy and the big SMILE on your face along with the tears of joy. I love that you are not affraid to show your emotions, to me that is one of the qualities a true man. It is one of the things that I love about my husband of almost 30 years. I talked to Tim Cindric and he is suppose to give you a message, so if he hasn’t,ask him about it. See you there in a few weeks.
