
Helio Castroneves figures he’ll be persuing a Fort Lauderdale, Fla., department store soon enough in search of a Barbie doll with accessories for his daughter Mikaella, who turns 2 on Dec. 28.
So the three-time Indianapolis 500 champion took the lead of his shopping partner — 9-year-old Hope — in selecting just the right Mattel signature doll.
“They certainly have a lot of different ones,” he said as Hope quickly transitioned to the Pet Shop display. “I can see we’ll be here for a while.”
The IZOD IndyCar Series drivers joined Indianapolis Colts players in playing “Santa” during a special holiday shopping experience for 40 underserved youth from Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Indiana and Center Grove Elementary School at an Indianapolis Meijer store.
Each youngster was allotted a $200 Meijer gift card and an hour to fill their wish list and an additional $20 Meijer gift card to purchase a toy to donate to the “Toys for Tots” program. The evening started with a pizza party for the youngsters, and each received signed driver photos.
Big Brothers, Big Sisters chaperones, who were keeping a running total of items selected, reminded youngsters not to forget gifts for siblings and parents.
