Helio Castroneves has practice day shortened by accident and rain

Helio Castroneves practice was cut short on Thursday, at Mid-Ohio, due to an accident and rain in the city of Lexington, OH. Early in the morning, the American Ed Carpenter spun in front of the Brazilian, who didn’t have time for any maneuver to avoid the collision, which caused only material damage.

From there, the mechanics of Team Penske went to work hard in the backup car, so Castroneves could be back on track soon. However, when all the work had been completed and the engine was ready to warmup, the heavy rain ended activities.

“Unfortunately, on lap six, at eight-forty-five am, Ed Carpenter’s car spun in turn nine and stood in the middle of the track. The curve is uphill and you can not see the exit. I came at high speed, the signal was not efficient and the impact was made, “said Castroneves, highlighting the fact that there was no injury of any kind. “Thankfully no one was hurt,” concluded the 2nd position holder of the IZOD IndyCar Series Championship.

Helio Castroneves is up to 3rd place in the IndyCar championship

Helio Castroneves is up to 3rd place in the IndyCar championship

After completing the Honda Toronto Indy Grand Prix in 6th position, Helio Castroneves could celebrate moving up another position in the IZOD IndyCar Series point standings. With ten races into the championship and only with five left to finish the season, the Team Penske driver maintained his fuel economy strategy to avoid a third pit stop in the closing laps.

Usually characterized by large number of yellow flags, the Canadian race this year had only three. This made the Brazilian driver work harder, since the plan was for a race that had a greater number of interruptions therefor saving tires.

The fact that the first yellow occurred on lap 24, Castroneves who was running in 5th, was able to push his first stop to the 26th. Then he stopped again on lap 54. His second and last pit stop occurred during the 54th lap. By the strategy adopted, the driver of the Dallara Chevrolet DW12 would need to stop for the third time around the 80th lap. But he was able to regain positions, without getting involved in accidents or force the equipment. This ability was crucial in lap 82 when he escaped without injury, two accidents that happened around him almost simultaneously. “The day was very positive because it was a solid 6th place finish and another position advanced in the championship,” said Castroneves, now with 289 points.
